Course Evaluations

Please complete a course evaluation (if you haven't already) by logging in here: http://www.extension.harvard.edu/course-evaluations. Elaine and I take these seriously. Many course policies are the direct result of student feedback, including having a practice final (instead of a tedious review session), makeup quizzes, and ungraded homework. You talked. We listened!

Final

If you would like your final exam back, please bring a big-ish self-addressed stamped envelope and we will send it to you.

Also, if you haven't already, please take a moment to complete course evaluations. Elaine and I take these very seriously!

Reminder: No Section Tomorrow

Since there was no class last week, there will be no section tomorrow, Tuesday 12/2.

Section Scehdule

Section will be held next week, Tuesday 11/25. Elaine will return grades exams (& quizzes) and go over the exam.

There is no class next week (owing to the holiday), and the following section, Tuesday 12/2, is canceled.

Review (Again)

Judging from the performance on last week's review quiz, Elaine and I decided it would be worth trying one more time. So, this Thursday (11/13), we will have a redo. Expect a 10-question review quiz in the same format as last week's (available here), given during the last hour of class.

You will also take a quiz on last week's material (exponential functions). Please read the chapter on logs, which we will cover during the first part of Thursday's class.

And please go to section!

Elaine mistakenly announced that there are no Extension classes this Tuesday (for Veteran's  Day). In fact, Extension classes are on as usual, including section.

Note however that there will be no section the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (December 2).

Revised Syllabus

Elaine and I talked and we agree that we need to spend more time on inverses and composition of functions. So that is what we will do in class this Thursday. Stay tuned for an official revised syllabus.

If you have been struggling on this material, or if you did not do as well on the quizzes or Exam 1 as you'd have liked, don't despair. Please come to Thursday's class for another crack at this material.

Don't forget that the grading scheme is very forgiving. Exam 1 can be replaced by a better score on the Practice Final. So everyone still has plenty of time to catch up.

PS And don't forget about Elaine's section! It *really* helps

Office Hours

I have to cancel this Thursday's office hours, which usually run 5:30 to 6:30. Class will be held as usual 6:30--9:30, Sever 102. Office hours will resume next week.

Road Closure

I received this notice just now, FYI:

In an effort to help you plan for this evening’s commute, I write to inform you the Cambridge Police Department has closed John F. Kennedy Street from Eliot Street to memorial Drive from noon to 8 p.m. This is being done to accommodate a dignitary visit at the Kennedy School of Government. Please note, there will be no foot traffic allowed after 2 p.m. today. Also, buses will be re-routed or the entire length of the closure, until 8 o’clock this evening.

Conjecture on Primes

Here is a timely article about a result I mentioned in class. The professor in this interview made a stunning advance on a very old question concerning primes. He has also just been awarded a MacArthur genius grant.

Section

Optional sections will meet Tuesdays 5:30-6:30 in Sever 215, followed by Elaine's office hours from 6:30-7:30.

You must attend section in order to take the (optional, risk-free) makeup quizzes.
